Putting in value streams that people align around is key to future-proofing your business.
What are value streams, I hear you ask? These are groupings of products (software, processes, services) that bring value to your business and operate in a way that minimises dependencies on other functions outside that value stream. The key here is being able to make decisions quickly and then to execute fast with expert teams headed up by skilled product owners. You’ll end up with multiple value streams as you scale up.
You don’t need perfection either — start with one value stream and prove it out first so you can spread out the learning as other value streams then form and start delivering value for your business.
There is a natural hierarchy here:
- Organisational vision and strategy that everyone understands
- Value streams funded for the long-term, aligned to deliver on the vision and owners of those value streams
- Product owners that know the domain and the customers and have alignment to the strategic vision
- Teams empowered with the right skills to deliver end-to-end and in concert with other teams within the value stream. High morale is a natural by-product
